TO COMPREHEND

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: On a dusky green background, a poem is pasted. It is made of words and phrases torn from magazines. The words and phrases have a white background with a black font, but some of them have a black background and white font. The poem reads, “to /// comprehend / need / question / first the body / the head /// tainted / hands, / not still / but /// dusty / The empty / self—”

Artist statement: The body is always a surprise. This work has me continually searching for words that capture the body's unexpected presence in the moment and restitching them into a new visual syntax, much as our cells create visual sentences that we call self.
